Subterranean Adventures: Camping in Caves

Adventure

Long before the days of pop-up tents, our ancestors sought shelter in caves and by rock formations. Play caveman on your next nature adventure and try cave camping instead of pitching a tent.

Caves are naturally occurring rock formations usually found by fault lines or sculpted by water. They are naturally cooler than the surrounding area and tend to have beautiful mineral deposits. These hidden treasures are found in almost every climate and provide more than shade — they are unique and diverse habitats.

Many national parks have opened up caves for respectful campers to enjoy. Cave creatures are adapted to low light conditions and can be extremely sensitive to outside disturbances. As with any camping experience, try to be as unobtrusive as possible.

Aside from the novelty of living in a cave for a couple of nights, one of the best things about cave camping is you don’t have to bring in your shelter along with your sleeping bag. While you’re certainly welcome to pitch a tent, cave camping is best experienced al fresco.

Take along some non-toxic sidewalk chalk and make your own wall drawings. Have fun reconnecting with your inner caveman!
