How to Respect Other Cultures While Traveling

Traveling to a foreign land means opening your mind to a new and unfamiliar culture, a veritable real-world textbook of history lessons that rattle on about religion and ways of life in other parts of the world. Use inspiration from school days and the suggestions below to develop cultural sensitivity that will last for a lifetime of travel.

Do a bit of research. If you have never traveled outside of the United States and have plans to visit a foreign country, there is bound to be some sort of cultural element with which you are unfamiliar. Research your destination country to learn the best ways to dress, speak and even which hand gestures are considered appropriate. Knowledge is your best ally when venturing into unknown territory.

Do your best to blend in. Attracting attention to oneself as a tourist is the easiest way to get robbed or harassed. Observe your surroundings and take note of how others behave in terms of dress, speech and even body language. Some factors may make it difficult to blend in (e.g., skin color) but doing as the locals do is the best way to avoid unwanted attention.

Keep it official. Whether you feel threatened or harassed or just confused, act like you know what you are doing. False tour guides and thieves are known to act as official guides or gentle locals who are eager to help you find your way but not before pickpocketing you. Stick to official tourism offices or hotel concierges when asking about directions or attractions.

Use common sense. With a bit of research, observation and friendly discussions with native citizens, a new culture can be a wonderful learning experience and open your mind to exploring even further.
