The river canyon created by the powerful and historically important Columbia River between Oregon and Washington is a great place for a vacation. Families, couples and travelers of all types will find plenty to keep busy in the area.
The scenic area protects a swath of the gorge known most for its waterfalls. Dozens of falls — most of them easily accessible off the main highway or via short hiking paths — cascade down impressive rock walls. The most popular, Multnomah Falls, also has a small restaurant and gift shop. It’s worth noting these areas are mobbed with visitors on weekends and throughout summer so go early or pick a rainy day — the falls are at their most impressive when it’s damp, anyway.
Numerous breweries, wineries and cideries also dot the area, making for fun diversions for travelers of drinking age. Notable stops include Ani Che Cellars, Full Sail Brewing (which also offers free tours) and Rack and Cloth Cidery.
The main town of Hood River is the gorge’s largest and offers plenty of dining and shopping opportunities. It’s also a great place to watch windsurfers catch the Columbia River Gorge’s infamous breezes.
