If you plan to carry gifts when traveling to visit loved ones, be sure to follow our tips for making sure the presents arrive safely with you to your final destination.
Use Your Carry-On
If size permits, keep your gifts in your carry-on bag. Flight delays or cancelations can result in lost checked luggage. Avoid that worry entirely by keeping your gifts close.
Handle With Care
For fragile items, pack the gift as if you were shipping it. Use plenty of bubble wrap and nestle the item in your luggage using soft clothes as padding.
Save the Wrapping
While wrapped gifts are not prohibited on flights, if something in a wrapped gift sets off the alarm, a security agent may need to unwrap the gift to inspect it. To be safe, bring some wrapping paper or a gift bag and tissue paper with you and wrap your gift once you arrive.
Follow the Liquid Rules
For food or items like perfume, make sure you follow the Transportation Security Administration’s liquid policy. Liquids must be 3.4 ounces or less per container.
Check with TSA
When in doubt, consult the TSA’s website for tips on how to safely bring your gifts onboard. Consult their checklist for a full list of restricted items.
