Portland, Ore., is a hub for literary enthusiasts. With independent publishers, vast bookstores and multiple cafés, the quirky city has something for everyone.

Powell’s City of Books

This independent bookseller is the city’s most popular literary destination for a reason. Spanning an entire city block, Powell’s is one of the biggest independent booksellers in the United States. It has four floors and features color-coded rooms, including a rare book room. Powell’s operates five stores in Oregon, including one at Portland International Airport.

The Heathman Hotel

The premiere literary hotel in the United States is home to an impressive library with more than 2,400 books signed by Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winners. Monday through Thursday from 5–7 p.m., the hotel hosts a library social with complimentary wine from a local winery. Of course, books can be checked out and enjoyed in the privacy of your room. Specials are available throughout the year, including the Books By Your Bedside deal complete with a signed book and a personal tour of the library.

Independent Publishing Resource Center

This non-profit organization is ideal for anyone looking to publish their own books, comics, graphic novels or zines. With workspace open daily, the center’s goal is to facilitate creative expression and community engagement by providing the tools needed to independently publish work. Workshops are available for non-members.

Reading Frenzy

If you’re looking for unique works, head to Reading Frenzy. With a collection of indie books, the store aims to support local and independent authors. The gallery and event space hosts comic art, graphic design, typography and paper craft exhibits, among others. A selection of books, art and merchandise is available on the website.

Multnomah County Library

With its 18 branches, the Multnomah County Library is the oldest library system west of the Mississippi River and the second most-used system in the United States. Visit the central downtown location to see a spectacular tree sculpture in the children’s section. The piece weighs more than a ton and incorporates characters from books like The Wizard of Oz.
