My mom was always after me to put on a scarf before going outside when I was a kid. Now, I’ve made it a habit to pack a scarf wherever I go, and recommend it to any traveler. Time after time, scarves have proven to be the most versatile item in my pack or suitcase.
Airport terminals, planes and museums have a tendency to crank up the air conditioning, so if you are prone to getting cold easily, having a scarf on hand can make all the difference. You can use a scarf as a shawl or blanket to keep yourself from shivering while on the go. You can even bunch it up and use it as a little pillow to lean on, which can be handy on a plane or bus.
Of course, a scarf will keep you warm while you’re out and about in cold weather, but it can be just as handy in the summer months. Wearing a light scarf in the summer can actually help keep you cool. It sounds strange, but a scarf can protect you from overheating from sun exposure and keep your skin from getting sunburned. Some hotels and hostels also don’t provide towels, so a scarf can prove handy as an impromptu beach mat or sarong.
If you plan on visiting conservative mosques or churches, like St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, you may be denied entrance if you are not dressed modestly. Modest dress codes can be difficult to accommodate in warm weather, but it’s important to dress respectfully. Wearing a light scarf as a quick shawl can help you avoid being denied entrance to these iconic sites, and be easily stored in your bag after.
Scarves can also allow more variety in what you’re wearing without adding a ton of space to your suitcase. With limited options to wash your clothes while traveling, a scarf can also make it a little less noticeable that you are repeating outfits. If you are prone to spilling, like me, it can also cover up a small stain in a pinch.
