Barcelona’s Public Transit System

Barcelona is extremely well-connected by public transit, making it easy, fast and cheap to travel within the city. Here are a few ways to get around town (and the region).

By bus: Barcelona’s bus system is nothing short of extensive. The rides are one flat rate, so hop off whenever you’d like for the same price as a cross-town jaunt. Tickets can be purchased and validated on board.

By train: Barcelona has one local underground system (the Metro) and two regional train systems, FCG and RENFE Rodalies. The Metro takes you within the city for only 90 cents a ride, while the regional lines take you as far south as Coma-ruga and as far north as Portbou, near the French border. Tickets are available based on a zone system, so make sure to study the station maps before buying tickets at the automatic machines.

By tram: With only a few routes in certain areas of the city, the tram isn’t always the most convenient option, but it can be a fun alternative to the bus. Buy tickets at tram stops and validate once on board.

By cab: Uber may be illegal in Barcelona, but the city is prepared with other options like Cabify. Old-fashioned taxis are abundant as well: Just raise your hand to hail one, as you would in any major American city.

By foot: Despite Barcelona’s impressive connectivity, you would be remiss to rely solely on public transportation while visiting the artsy city. Spend hours strolling the streets and gazing up at the uniquely stunning architecture. With art around every corner, the city is its own public gallery.
