The Bergenhus Fortress is one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Norway and serves as a de facto gateway to the Bergen harbor. The massive structure contains sections built as early as the 1240s and buildings developed as recently as World War II.
Inside, you’ll find small museums and grand halls where the military and religious leaders would meet to discuss defenses and hold services. Haakon’s Hall is one of the more prominent attractions, designed in the late Gothic style. After several fires it has undergone several restorations and now contains a modest display of beautiful tapestries, while also serving as an occasional concert venue. On the grounds outside you’ll also find two small concert grounds hosting performances and festivals.
The highlight of the castle is the Bergenhus Fortress Museum. The museum highlights the fortress’ contribution to local life throughout history while also focusing on the castle’s role in various military conflicts. During my visit there was a wonderful showcase on the resistance movement to the Nazi invasion.
Rosenkrantz Tower is also a must when visiting the fortress. While the keep itself has been continuously modified over the centuries to serve multiple purposes, the original medieval tower still maintains most of its structure and is open to the public.
Overall the Bergenhus Fortress is a great look into the history of the city and Norway as a whole and was a highlight of my trip.
