To capture some of the magic and tranquility of the sea, eco-hostel Casa en el Agua hovers over the Caribbean, off the coast of Colombia.

The hostel is built directly over the sparkling, cerulean waters of the Caribbean, inviting visitors to swim, float and otherwise relax with an intimate view of the water. Not too shabby for a backpacker’s hostel.

The wood-and thatch-built building is located in the country’s San Bernando Islands. Conservation is key at Casa en el Agua, surrounded by Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Natural Park. There’s solar power, composting toilets and bucket showers — definitely not the most luxurious accommodations, but worth it for the setting. There’s no internet here, so you’ll truly be forced to disconnect.

The floating, two-story building has room for 35 people across private rooms, dorms and a hammock sleeping area. A restaurant on-site serves three meals a day with options like fresh lobster and locally caught ceviche. Cocktails are also on offer, further adding to the relaxation element.
