During my recent visit to Madrid, we spent some time exploring the trendy Malasaña neighborhood. We stopped at Cuatro de Ocho for lunch.
The restaurant specializes in Mediterranean dishes, with plenty of vegetarian options. We were seated in the back room, decorated in warm tones with a large book shelf against the back wall. Our group dined on several dishes, served family-style.
To start, I ordered a Spanish beer, Alhambra. After being out in the sun for most of the morning, it was a refreshing choice. Up first was a salad with strawberries, avocado and grilled shrimp. Much like the beer, it was a refreshing start. Next, we enjoyed a dish called “broken eggs” that consisted of fried potato slices topped with egg, truffle oil and cheese. It reminded me of an updated spin on the classic Spanish dish tortilla española. For the main dishes we had squid and pork. The squid was tender and light and the pork was crispy and salty.
What is a meal without dessert? We ended lunch with chocolate cake and carrot cake. Both were incredible, but the carrot cake was the winner. While every dish was flavorful, I most enjoyed the broken eggs for the unique yet simple flavor combinations.
If you find yourself in the Malasaña neighborhood, a visit to Cuatro de Ocho is a must.
