Dining out while on the road can be one of the most fun parts of a vacation. However, going out to breakfast, lunch and dinner each day can really add up. Follow our tips for sticking to a budget while dining out on vacation.
Research
Before your trip, come up with a dining plan. Decide when to splurge and when to cut back. Research restaurants you’d like to visit and which ones offer the best prices during different days and times.
Look for Specials
Many restaurants offer early bird, lunch or happy hour specials with discounted menu items. Take advantage of the cheaper prices for dishes also on the regular menus.
Use a Kitchen
Book an accommodation with access to a kitchen, like a suite in a hotel or an Airbnb (https://www.airbnb.com). Buy local ingredients to cook some meals during your stay to cut down on restaurant costs.
Skip Room Service
If you do stay at a hotel, avoid room service. There can often be hidden fees and overpriced items.
Pack Snacks
Bring a few snacks to curb hunger on your trip. Eating some trail mix or a granola bar before a meal may help you order less.
Splurge on Lunch
In general, lunch pricing tends to be cheaper than dinner, even for the same menu items. If you want a couple splurge meals, aim for lunch service.
Eat Smart
Choose food that will keep you full for longer, especially combinations of high protein and fiber meals.
