Explore Turkmenistan’s Door to Hell

The Darwaza gas crater, affectionately called Turkmenistan’s Door to Hell, is a beautiful if not unsettling attraction in the heart of the country’s remote desert landscape. A night spent alongside the burning pit is a unique item to check off the bucket list and possibly a great way to give yourself nightmares for years to come.

The fire inside the crater has burned since 1971 and was originally ignited to help neutralize the effects of a drilling rig accident that released poisonous raw methane into the atmosphere. Putting out the fire was deemed too much of a feat, and far too expensive an option to explore. What was left was a unique, harmless and enormous fire pit in the middle of nowhere.

One of the creepiest aspects of the pit is the low, rumbling sound that can be heard as you approach, lending credence to the theory there’s something nefarious lurking beneath the surface. Massive flames and fireballs are emitted from the hole much the same as a volcano, creating a strikingly beautiful display at night.

There are plenty of options for visitors interested in staying overnight. Chaikhanas are available in nearby Darvaza, or you can rent out a yurt or tent for around $10. Many travelers opt to bring their own camping gear and set up shop near the base of the crater. Be wary of your distance as the fireballs tend to go wherever they feel.
