Late summer and early fall present the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the last gasp of farmers markets and apple orchards. If you are in the Midwest and living in the Chicago area, western Michigan is a great alternative to Wisconsin and northern Indiana. Take this opportunity for a short road trip along the east coast of Lake Michigan. In less than two hours you can start to make your way up the peninsula. Take in the autumnal beauty and be sure to breathe in the fresh air, enjoy the turning leaves and stop by one of these farms or markets for some of the best produce money can buy.
Not long after you cross the Michigan border and head north, you will arrive in Stevensville. It is here you will find Schaedler’s Shed. This is not a market per se, but a local farm that sells its produce out of the barn in back. Have a pleasant conversation with the owner while picking out tomatoes, apples and maybe some late-season peaches.
Continue north on US-31 and you will come to Holland Farmer’s Market. Just north of St. Joseph, this market lives up to its reputation for having everything, with breakfast tacos, flowers, meat, cheese and produce.
If you decide to work your way inland, Fulton Street Farmers Market in Grand Rapids offers a lot of variety in a pleasantly upbeat atmosphere.
If none of these options suit your fancy or your location, here is a great guide to all of your western Michigan farmers market needs.
