Flying to Cuba from the United States

Tips / Destination

Traveling to Cuba from the United States is a little less complicated. After 88 years, President Obama became the first American head of state to arrive in Havana since Calvin Coolidge. Eisenhower became the first president to exclude all exports to Cuba, but subsequent administrations continued to do so.

While it was always possible to do so (via other countries), it is now a little easier; there are still many restrictions and hoops to jump through, but if you have the time and the patience you can negotiate through the bureaucracy in less time than it takes to watch a series on Netflix. A good place to start is always with the governing body and they can answer any of your questions regarding traveling to Cuba as a U.S. citizen.

Cuba still outlaws tourism, but this is more of a technicality than a hard and fast rule and if you are booking a solo trip you may want to say you are on an educational trip, while having a friend in country will certainly help but may not be essential. There was a time (and not so long ago) that these trips could cost upwards of $3,000 but now the cost of traveling to Cuba is a lot more reasonable and certainly cheaper than taking a trip to Europe.

With a little research and a few dollars you could be having one of the best mojitos you ever had while enjoying a Caribbean sunset at the same time.

JetBlue began regular service to Havana in the last days of August this year and plans to service Havana with at least seven daily flights.
