Foods You Should Eat When You Fly

Tips / Travel

Your body reacts to flying. You dry out, you bloat up, your digestive system is all out of whack, you sometimes feel like utter crap. However, you can remedy a few travel symptoms by making the right dietary choices. Pack a few of these items into your carry-on (making purchases as needed in your airport terminal) and enjoy a mid-flight munch.

  • Low-salt snacks: If you’re trying to avoid bloating, salt will only exacerbate the issue. Skip the chips and pretzels, and go with something a little healthier and fresh — like some veggies or fruit. Plus, the right produce will give you an added bonus of Vitamin C, perfect for warding off the germs of your fellow passengers.

  • Hydration: Yes, you know you’re supposed to take water every time it’s offered, but it can be tempting to order a soda or cocktail instead. The next time your taste buds are just bored of sipping water through an eight-hour flight, opt for herbal tea or flavored sparkling water instead. Both are easy to find and have hydrating benefits with extra taste.

  • Lean protein: Trying to stay awake or fight off jet lag once you reach your destination? Opt for a lean protein for energy, as something deep-friend or fatty will just leave you feeling a little icky. Chicken (not breaded), fish, turkey, nuts, even protein bars … they all work well.

What you shouldn’t be eating? Greasy, fatty, gassy foods — cabbage, beans, Brussels sprouts, broccoli. It all can come back to bite you once you’re mid-air.
