Destinations / North America

If you think of American-produced maple syrup and only think of Vermont, you’re missing out. While Vermont is responsible for producing the most maple syrup in the United States, New York also produces its fair share of the sugary-sweet product.

Maple season, February–March, can be experienced in the Adirondacks of northern New York, where producers are scattered all across the mountainous region and welcome visitors into their sugar shacks for tastings, shopping and educational opportunities. You’ll find the most activity occurring during New York State’s Maple Weekend, an event that actually stretches across two weekends, March 16–17 and March 23–24. Check out the event page for information on which producers offer special events during these weekends and how you can participate.

Looking for a place to stay? Try High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid. The property is offering its Mountains & Maple package that includes a gift of authentic, locally farmed maple syrup; maple cotton candy; maple popcorn; and two resort mugs. If the weather cooperates and there’s snow during your stay, you’ll also enjoy complimentary snowshoe rentals, complimentary access to Whiteface Club & Resort Nordic Center for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and a 10 percent discount on ski rentals.
