Tips / Travel

Back pain can put a major damper on everyday life and can make traveling a serious obstacle. For travelers who experience chronic back pain morning, noon and night, the following tips should help relieve symptoms and allow you to fully enjoy your vacation.

Board later. Rather than rushing to cram your already aching body into a tin can, also known as an airplane, take your time when boarding to minimize the amount of time you will have to sit uncomfortably in a plane seat. During the flight, be sure to stand up multiple times, depending on the length of the flight, and try to partake in stretching exercises that do not disturb other passengers.

Keeping your luggage on the lighter side will also help prevent possible strains from hurling bags into car trunks and overhead bins. Pack a rolling carry-on bag plus one hand item (purse, laptop bag) and take advantage of the luggage trolleys at the airport.

Don’t forget to pack your ammunition: pain relievers, heating pads and braces tailored to your particular pain are absolute must-bring items for any trip.

Once you have landed, make your way to your pre-researched hotel where a firm bed awaits. Consult with the hotel before you book to ensure an appropriate bed can be made available for your specific pain condition.

Finally, relax! Stress fuels chronic pain, so try to sit back, breathe deeply and use the time away from daily life as it is intended.
