Trends / History

Black History Month, running the entire month of February, started in 1926 as “Negro History Week” by Carter G. Woodson, a prominent historian, scholar, educator and publisher. In 1976 it was institutionalized as a month-long celebration, supported by every U.S. president in office since with proclamations endorsing the theme. This year’s theme, “African Americans in Times of War,” explores the complex meanings and roles of African Americans in every American war.

Black History Month isn’t only a time to simply reflect on the prominent figures, movers and shakers and leaders of years past, but also a time to reflect on the current climate and condition of the present.

In the past year alone, there have been numerous movements, conflicts and concerns for the African American community in the United States, and it is an important time to highlight these causes and shed a light on the progress we still need to make. The growth of the Black Lives Matter movement spurred by police brutality, fatal and violent protests in Charlottesville caused by an alt-right/neo-Nazi rally and the reaction to the current administration’s attitude and commentary on race are just a few of the complex issues facing our country today.

It is important to unite and come together during these times and shed a light on key issues. There are numerous events, rallies and lectures happening over the month aimed at educating the public and bringing communities together. Consider attending one of these events to show your pride and support, educate a friend or family member or celebrate your community.
