Train travel in India is on the bucket list of many, but now that experience is set to be a bit more complex for foreign travelers relying on the flexibility of the IndRail pass. The pass will be discontinued this year for non-Indian travelers.
Many passengers used the pass to ride unlimited trips on trains in a chosen period of time. Rather than pre-booking online or arriving early at the station, passengers simply jumped on the train. The pass didn’t necessarily save money, but it did offer a degree of flexibility.
Now, passengers must pre-book online or stand in line at a railway station and be entered in the Foreign Tourist Quote on Indian trains. The online booking system is notoriously cumbersome, with several involved steps, and some customers have trouble getting their payment accepted or finding a contact number.
Foreign visitors will still have other benefits when booking rail travel. The country recently announced foreign visitors can book a seat up to a year in advance online while Indians can only do so 120 days ahead.
