International Travel Tips for First-Timers

Traveling abroad, whether to Mexico or Moscow, can be a frightening venture, especially for those who have never crossed cultures before. What to pack, how to prepare and what to say in a foreign country are all items to consider before jetting off to a faraway land. Read on for a few tips if you´re facing your first trip overseas.

Educate yourself about visa requirements. Heaps of countries allow Americans to visit for a certain period of time without obtaining a visa. Some, however, require tourist visas that can be arranged either before departure at the local consulate or at the destination airport.

Make time. Traveling internationally is more complicated especially when it comes to airport procedures. Checking bags, spending time in security lines and waiting again at passport control can make for a lot of standing around. Plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours before take-off to ensure there is adequate time for everything. Also check to see if online check-in is available.

Learn a few words of the language. Even just a simple ¨hello¨ and ¨thank you¨ will go a long way with the locals. It shows an attempt to assimilate and an open-minded attitude toward a new culture.

Be patient … not only with your surroundings, but also with yourself. Try not to plan too much on the first day and instead take some time to get your bearings and get to know your neighborhood. Picky eaters may want to scout out a supermarket where they can buy foods they are familiar with.
