LGBT: Savannah

Savannah, Ga., is most definitely a southern city, meaning it comes with a few of the attitudes you might expect. Hospitality here is wonderful and the locals are definitely on the friendly side, but they tend to hold fast to their “traditional values.” You might get a few funny looks if you walk hand in hand with your partner here, but no one is likely to be outright hostile.

There are two main gay bars in town — Club One and Chuck’s Bar. You’ll find a younger crowd and more dancing at Club One while Chuck’s Bar is a more relaxed atmosphere that caters to an older crowd. Club One is where you’ll also find the infamous Lady Chablis from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil fame.

Outside of the club scene, you’ll find plenty of gay establishments like restaurants and stores along River Street. The Mellow Mushroom is a great place to taste some Italian food with Southern flair.

Of course, nobody goes to Savannah just to hang out in stores and clubs. The entire downtown area is one of the most beautiful in the country and well deserving of a leisurely stroll. The overhanging mossy trees make for a romantic atmosphere and great date destination.

For beach lovers, Tybee Island is the place to be. Savannah Beach in particular is one of the best spots to find gay locals sunbathing and enjoying the waves. Overall, Savannah is one of the more gay-friendly cities in the south and certainly worth a trip for anyone looking for a taste of antebellum charm.
