Once a thriving manufacturing town of steel and precious metals, Pittsburgh has reimagined itself as a thriving bastion of education and medical research over the last two decades. While it doesn’t have the most bustling gay scene in America, it has become a welcoming place for the community.
The LGBTQ+ scene in Pittsburgh is dispersed throughout the city, with no true epicenter to speak of. Many of the more popular gay venues are located in the northern and eastern sections of town, though you can find them smattered elsewhere as well. The historic warehouse district is known as The Strip and features many of the city’s most popular nightclubs, gay or straight. The area is also well revered for its dining options — be sure to check out Edgar’s Tacos and Wigle Whiskey. The Strip also features an impressive arts scene with many of Pittsburgh’s top galleries located here.
The club scene in Pittsburgh isn’t exactly rivaling that of larger cities like New York City, but that’s not to say there aren’t a few gems hidden here and there. P Town is arguably the most popular gay club in the city and boasts a diverse crowd ranging from young college students to retirees. 941 Saloon features an after-hours bar open beyond 2 a.m., alongside colorful karaoke nights. Or, check out 5801 for a laidback atmosphere featuring a video lounge, darts and excellent fried foods.
One of many tourists’ favorite things about Pittsburgh is the wealth of impressive Victorian homes converted into bed and breakfasts. LGBTQ+ travelers will feel right at home in the gay-owned Parador Inn, just a short walk from the Aviary. There’s also the gay-owned Arbors B&B, a 19th-century farmhouse located just a couple miles from the North Side Museums.
