New York to Open Spain Equivalent of ‘Eataly’

For a few years, New Yorkers have enjoyed the overflowing pasta, pizza and fresh ingredient options at Eataly, a downtown food hall that transports visitors to a rustic Italian market, pizzeria and wine bar, all rolled into one. But within the next year, a second, similar food hall will debut in the Big Apple to offer foodies the same experience, but with Spain as the leading role.

Located in Midtown West’s Hudson Yard complex, the 35,000-square-foot space will be the brainchild of Chef José Andrés, a Spanish chef who has made a name for himself with his D.C. restaurants, and the Adria brothers. The space will feature a bevvy of specialty restaurants selling everything from Spanish fried seafood (e.g., calamari, croquettes) to Spanish-style pizzas called cocas. Other celebrity chefs that signed on to the project include Thomas Keller — planning a restaurant with a “Mad Men theme” — as well as David Chang from Momofuku and Michael Lomanaco from Porter House Bar and Grill.

Other restaurants will serve traditional Spanish fare like paella, Basque-style cuisine consisting of bite-size pinchos and the sweet Catalan treat of churros with hot chocolate for dipping. In addition to the restaurants, the hall also will feature a market area with fresh ingredients as well as a stand-up gastronomic bar, a tapas bar, a jamón bar and a tortilla stand where patrons can dine in or take food to go.
