Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park is a beautiful desert landscape full of unique features you won’t find elsewhere in the world. It’s a long stretch and most people don’t realize you could spend an entire day here and never fully see all it has to offer.
Once inside you’ll make a pit stop at the information center in order to grab a map and probably fill up on gas, as you’re going to need it for the drive — it takes 45 minutes just to drive from one end to the other if you don’t stop. The first thing you’ll notice is the Painted Desert, a marvelous piece of desert and rolling hills that seem to contain all the colors of the rainbow.
With more than a dozen places to stop along the way it’s hard to pick a favorite. The giant log and crystal forest trails offer some amazing chances for exploration and up-close looks at petrified logs. Be careful not to take anything out of the park, though, or face a thorough inspection and fine!
The Rainbow Forest Museum is a great place to learn about the local ecology and history and is a fun place for those with kids. At one stop along the way you’ll also get to view ancient petroglyphs in the rocks.
Overall, the Petrified Forest National Park is truly a delightful surprise for those who take the time to explore it. I was certainly impressed with everything it had to offer and would recommend it to friends.
