Brush your luscious locks with this smart hairbrush. The Keratase Hair Coach powered by Withings is the world’s first ever smart hairbrush, developed in collaboration with L’Oréal.
The $200 brush, unveiled at the CES Technology show, was awarded the International CES Innovation Award. The brush was designed after research by L’Oréal found forceful hair brushing can cause hair damage, including breakage and split ends. To minimize this damage, the brush has multiple sensors to provide information on the quality of hair and brushing patterns.
The brush has a built-in microphone which listens as you brush to identify your hair type: dry, frizzy, split ends and more. The accelerometer and gyroscope within the brush provide information on brushing patterns, as well as count brush strokes, using haptic feedback to alert you if you’re brushing too forcefully. The conductivity sensors distinguish between wet and dry hair to ensure correct readings.
The brush sends the information it gathers to the related app over Bluetooth or WiFi, allowing the app to factor in environmental conditions such as the temperature, humidity, UV index and more to provide you with a hair quality score, details on how well you brush your hair and tips to improve. The app also provides users with product suggestions — Kerastase-brand specific, of course.
The brush itself is a simple paddle brush with a mix of detangling plastic bristles and nylon and natural boar bristles. The mix of bristles ensures your hair will be detangled without pain while smoothing your hair. Boar bristles are the best for hair, as they naturally distribute your hair’s oil while you brush, but also promote hair health and circulation at the scalp.
