The most recent evidence indicates domesticated dogs evolved from the grey wolf nearly 130,000 years ago in Asia, where they spread to the rest of the planet and were selectively bred. Similar to their ancestors, dogs may consume raw meat and have been for thousands of years.

Commercial dog food, such as kibbles or canned meats, only came on the consumer market 100 years ago. Accordingly, dogs’ digestive systems have not evolved to eat completely kibble-based diets. Dogs are strong, adaptable animals that can eat and live on kibble-based diets; however, dogs cannot receive the nutrients they need to thrive from kibble. Dog owners, why do you think dogs have become susceptible to so many chronic diseases?

What do you think dogs consumed for the past thousands of years? It sure was not kibble and canned meat surprise. Some dog owners believe feeding dogs real food is wrong, but dogs are meant to eat raw, unprocessed healthy foods.

A dog’s body was designed to eat specific foods. For example, earthworms eat dirt and cows eat grass. Accordingly, dogs need fresh, whole, moisture-dense foods. A proper diet for dogs consists of quality proteins, fats and some fruits and vegetables. Because dogs no longer eat prey, they receive vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber from fruits and vegetables.

You may feed your dog cooked or raw meat. Parasites grow in the intestines so you don’t have to worry about muscle meat being infected. But, like sushi, you can place the meat in the freezer for a minimum of three days to ensure any parasites are killed. Dogs love meat on the bone. Ground bone provides a good source of calcium.

Do your research, find out what fruits and vegetables your dog should not eat and create a real food diet to ensure your dog lives a happy and healthy life.
