On a recent trip to Boston, looking for a hotel within a reasonable walking distance of an event venue, I came across Hotel AKA Back Bay and, having only stayed with the brand once before, years ago, I decided to give it a go.
The property definitely has modern finishes and a contemporary aesthetic, from the compact lobby to on-site dining to guestrooms. However, there is some wear and tear. While Hotel AKA Back Bay is relatively young, the property was previously Loews Boston Hotel, and it’s clear the hotel had a life before its current one.
Despite the accommodations not looking as fresh as they did online, though, I still found the premium king room very comfortable and adequately outfitted for an overnight stay, with plenty of storage space, floor space and a large bathroom.
Grabbing dinner before a show, on-site restaurant, The Berkeley, despite being relatively empty at 7 p.m., still impressed, with its sourdough pizza and steak frites. The bistro was much busier during the next day’s breakfast service, but we were able to get our meals quickly and head out the door with no delay.
In short, I’d stay at this property again — but now with the knowledge that maybe things aren’t as shiny as what you see online.
