I can almost hear the groans when I say this place is a must visit when you’re in Mexico City. Located on a busy “club” street in La Condessa, La Perla sits next to the famed whiskey bar Wallace, but instead offers up tequila with aplomb and a generous serving of curt service, frightening security guys with ear pieces and average food. However, the moment you sit down and order a bottle of, say, Heradura Reposada, all that changes.

The security guards begin to smile, the servers begin to smile, the live, large-sized Ranchero band on the stage begins to smile while asking for requests, and the idea that you’re in a tourist trap dissolves in mere minutes. Oh, and the food begins to taste a little better, but at night you needn’t walk more than 60 feet in any direction to be treated to proper street tacos so don’t think you can’t head out for a quick 75-cent taco.

If you’re not ordering a bottle, don’t bother with La Perla de Occidente, but if you do, you’ll be treated immediately to the best sangrita in D.F. (no, not sangria, but a mixture of tomato juice, picante, Maggi seasoning and lime). You’ll also get cans of Squirt, a half pitcher of lime juice and a bucket of ice (Squirt was developed in Mexico to accompany tequila in the sun and it truly does work).

La Perla has a fantastic selection of bottles, none of which cost more than $100 with tip and the aforementioned accouterments. If you have a few days, come on Monday nights when all bottles are sold at half price.
