For many travelers, the DoubleTree chocolate chip cookie is iconic. Offered at check-in at every DoubleTree by Hilton, the cookie is a warm welcome to kick off your stay. However, one particular DoubleTree cookie is more famous and iconic than the others: It’s the very first cookie baked in space.
In 2019, researchers on the International Space Station baked the cookie thanks to a partnership between Hilton and Zero G Kitchen, which creates appliances for use during space flights. The cookie remained on the ISS until 2020 when it returned home from orbit for food science testing.
Now, you can see the cookie for yourself at National Air and Space Museum, where it will live in Chantilly, Virginia.
“We are thrilled to display DoubleTree by Hilton’s chocolate chip cookie as the first-ever food baked in space by astronauts,” said Jennifer K. Levasseur, museum curator, Department of Space History, National Air and Space Museum. “Innovations like baking could make even longer duration missions in space much more enjoyable, and sustainable, so DoubleTree’s historic space cookie is a natural choice to represent this development in the Udvar-Hazy Center’s display of space food.”
