The Hekla Aurora is the newest addition to Icelandair’s fleet: a Boeing 757 dressed to the nines in the ethereal colors and visage of the Aurora Borealis. While the exterior is expertly painted to reflect the glamour of the northern lights, the interior is fixed with LED mood lighting showing off the famed spectacle.
All of this is in honor of the Icelandair Stopover, which gives travelers the option to stopover in Iceland for up to seven nights at no additional airfare cost on their way between Europe and North America.
The best season to stop over and see the Northern Lights is from September to mid-April, when the nights are fully dark. Because they are the most elusive attraction in the region, seeing them is a bit of an Easter egg hunt. For the greatest odds of seeing the lights, it’s recommended to stay at least seven nights to ensure all the factors are aligned: full dark, clear skies, weather and right location.
Bonus fun fact: “Hekla” is a traditional Icelandic girl’s name, and the name of one of the region’s most famous volcanoes.
