Prefer to travel with your pet? If you also prefer to stay in home rentals when you’re on the go — a popular pick for pet parents especially — you may find you’re paying quite a lot of extra dough just to bring Fido or Whiskers along for the ride.
A recent study from MarketWatch looked at the prices of pet-friendly rentals throughout the United States, and found the cities where you’ll pay the highest premiums for bringing your pet along with you, as well as the places where you’re more likely to find pet-friendly rentals are just more expensive than non-pet-friendly rentals in general.
The study found Honolulu, Hawai’i, charges the highest premium for pet-friendly rentals, at more than 209 percent. That’s more than twice the premium for pet-friendly rentals you’ll pay in the destination with the second-highest premium: Monterey, California. Other destinations where pet-friendly premiums are highest include San Francisco, California; San Jose, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Newark, New Jersey.
So, where can you expect the charges for pet-friendly rentals to be closer to the charges for non-pet-friendly rentals? The study found pet-friendly rentals in Juneau, Alaska, are, on average, actually cheaper than the city’s non-pet-friendly rentals. The same applies to Puerto Rico. You’ll pay minimal premiums — under 10 percent — in other destinations such as Detroit, Michigan; Nashville, Tennessee; and Columbus, Georgia.
