Trends / Adventure

Between July and September, hundreds of leopard sharks gather off the coast of La Jolla within San Diego, Calif. Don’t panic — these sharks are timid and completely harmless to humans as they forage for food in the warm waters along the ocean bottom. Summer is the peak season for an experience you’ll never forget of swimming with the sharks.

Kayaking, snorkeling and swimming are the best methods for interacting with the docile creatures. Hike Bike Kayak offers a 90-minute snorkel tour. Guests swim alongside the leopard sharks as well as explore sand beds for other marine life. Snorkeling gear is included.

Bike & Kayak Tours-La Jolla runs a 2.5-hour kayak and snorkel adventure, which includes kayaking to seven sea caves and kelp beds. These spots provide great leopard shark and marine life sightings. The group offers a shorter option: A 50-minute snorkel-only tour.

La Jolla Kayak features a year-round tour. Guests spend one hour with an experienced guide pointing out the best shark-viewing spots. Then, guests have two hours to explore on their own. Snorkel gear is included.

Prices vary based on date and time, so make sure you book the excursion to best suit your needs.
