Settling into your hotel room after a long flight can be a huge relief, but before you throw down your bags and hop into bed for a quick nap, make sure you give the room a once-over.
Check the Windows
The doors to most hotel rooms are fairly secure, but the windows can be an entirely different story. Be sure to check the lock on the windows to make sure passersby can’t sneak in while you’re away. If you feel like they aren’t secure enough to keep out burglars, contact the front desk and let them know you’d like them reinforced; most hotels are happy to comply.
Beware of Bedbugs
Most people don’t find out the terrible news they’ve been infested with bedbugs until they settle in for the night and wake up covered in bites. Don’t be one of those people. Check underneath fitted mattresses for signs of the bugs, including black feces and the bugs themselves. Also, lift up the mattress to check the box spring and search around the headboard too. They like dark places and cracks during the day.
Signs of Smoking
At lot of hotels today are charging deposits for smoking in-room and getting stiffed because of someone else’s poor choices is not a fun way to end a vacation. Always be sure to check around the room for damage caused by smokers and report it to the front desk when you check in.
Broken Appliances
The same goes for anything electronic in the room (TV, microwave, lamps, refrigerator, etc.). Test out each and every one and report any problems immediately. Pay attention to electrical problems because they pose a serious threat.
Check the Area
Most importantly, check around the area outside of the hotel to see if it’s safe. Nobody likes having to sleep with one eye open. Taking a quick walk around the block should give you a good idea of the area and if it’s a safe pace for you and your family.
