Tips / Safety

Airbnb has become one of the best alternatives available for travelers hoping to avoid pricey hotels while enjoying a more authentic experience in a new locale. Unfortunately, it’s had its own fair share of horror stories pop up in the news. To avoid your own travel nightmare, here are a few ways to stay safe when using the app.

Read the Reviews

A cheap rate shouldn’t be the deciding factor on booking a room. Make sure you read other travelers’ reviews of that listing and only stick with ones that are positive. If there are no reviews at all that doesn’t mean you should reject it outright, but definitely communicate with the owner and ask for references.

Share Your Plans

No matter where you’re booking, always be sure to leave your plans with a friend or family member. That way they can inform local police of exactly where you’re staying in case something goes down and they can’t get ahold of you.

Communicate

Before settling on a room, trade messages, or even a phone call, with the owner of the rental. It’ll help you get a feeling for their personality and their friendliness. If they’re not willing to chat with you that should send up a red flag.

Research the Area

Often the cheapest rentals are located on the outskirts of the city you’re traveling to. Get online and check the crime in the area before booking. It’s nice to save money, but not if you’re just going to get robbed where you are staying.

Check Social Media

If the owner is renting out rooms on Airbnb ,it’s likely they have social media accounts out there somewhere. Don’t be afraid to dig a little and see if you can come up with their Facebook or LinkedIn accounts to get a better feel for them. If you need to, ask for them.
