Dashwood Books

Dashwood Books is the definition of a hidden gem, appealing to book, art and design lovers alike. Located down a set of discreet sidewalk stairs on Bond Street, the store houses an impressive collection of rare, limited-edition and out-of-print photo books at cheap prices. Reportedly, fashion designers like Simone Rocha frequent the store for inspiration.

Taschen

For a great read with an artistic twist, head to Taschen in SoHo. Located in a cast iron building, the walls and interiors of the store are works of art in their own right, and the store is home to quirky features like floating bookshelves, egg chairs and colorful wall murals.

Books are Magic

When one bookstore closes, another opens. Author and Brooklyn resident Emma Straub opened Books are Magic when another store, BookCourt, closed, believing every neighborhood needs a nice place for people to read and socialize. Located in the Cobble Hill neighborhood, the shop hosts events and author readings almost nightly.

Albertine

For an overall cultural experience, visit Albertine on Fifth Avenue between 78th and 79th streets. This gorgeous bookstore offers an extensive collection including translations of international books, great events in the evenings and a stunning interior complete with a ceiling mural modeled after the night sky.

Argosy Books

Last, but certainly not least, is Argosy Books, the oldest bookstore in New York, opened in 1925. Located in Midtown, Argosy has been family-owned and operated since its opening. Easily spend an entire day browsing the store’s impressive collection of books, its old wooden desks, green lamps and unique collection of antique maps.
