The capital of Portugal does not disappoint in terms of sights, scenery and succulent seafood. But for adventure seekers who long to explore beyond the roaming hills of Lisbon, a daytrip to neighboring locales is an exercise in decision making. See below for five nearby locations to consider.
Sintra
When the entire region is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is difficult to argue against visiting Sintra, a 40-minute train ride west of Lisbon. Acres of forests and pedestrian pathways surround the Royal Palace of Sintra, a Moorish castle and a royal estate complete with caves and captivating photo-taking opportunities of a well from underground.
Cascais/Cabo de Roca
Keep moving west from Sintra to visit the westernmost point in continental Europe on the cliffs of Cabo de Roca, an enchanting landscape that rivals the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. Nearby in the old fishing village of Cascais, step into a cosmopolitan world with private beaches and a yacht marina.
Fátima
Catholics make pilgrimages to this small town 90 miles north of Lisbon to honor Our Lady of Fátima, a shrine to the Virgin Mary who in 1917 was reportedly seen on the site of the modern-day chapel within a basilica.
Óbidos
One hour north of Lisbon is the walled city of Óbidos, perched on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. During the summer, make the trip for the annual medieval market that involves the entire town and transports visitors centuries into the past.
Arrábida Natural Park
Hire a car and drive 40 minutes south to Lisbon’s most well-preserved nature reserve. Dozens of hiking trails, hidden coves and majestic beaches provide a calming respite from city life.
