Understanding Fado

Tips / Other

Fado is the ancient music of Portuguese ballads. The furthest back it can be officially traced is the 1820s, though many argue it probably dates further than that. Fado comes from the Latin “fatum,” which means “fate” in English.

Fado was a spontaneous genre, taking place at both formal and leisurely moments. It was often performed impromptu at cafes, bullfights, parties and even funerals. Lyrically, it referred to the banality of every day life, inextricably relating to social contexts of marginality, transgression and poverty. The actors, or singers, were often found in prisons, painted with tattoos, or sailors, singing about the hardships of life at sea, missing loved ones and expressing their isolation on the waters.

Today, the tradition lives on in many famous bars, particularly in Lisbon. Head to the Bairro Alto district to find some of the oldest Fado bars and restaurants. This is a truly unique and authentic experience. Alfama is perhaps the best quarter to experience Fado.

There are endless walking Fado tours in Lisbon, particularly during the high season from May to September. Lisbon is a beautiful city with a rich and vibrant culture, with Fado right at the fore of this. Clube de Fado is perhaps the best place to witness some authentic Fado.
