How confident are you in your sleep? Some participants actually put it to the test recently at a gathering by YOTEL and Hilton at Grand Central Terminal in New York City. The experience invited commuters and travelers to exchange their previous night’s sleep scores for rewards … and the findings were eye-opening.

Only 23 percent of participants said they have good sleep, averaging between 70 and 79 as their sleep score out of 100. Just 58 percent said it takes them less than 30 minutes to fall asleep, while 46 percent sleep as little as five or six hours each night. Thirteen percent actually get less than five hours of sleep each night.

The main culprits for sleep disruptions? According to 42 percent of participants, stress and anxiety are to blame.

The experience comprises part of a greater effort across the hospitality industry to design spaces for travelers to enjoy deep rest and sleep. In fact, according to Hilton’s 2027 Trends Report, 32 percent of travelers say spaces designed for reset and sleep play a major role in their decision to book a hotel.

Participants in the Sleep Exchange experience traded in their previous night’s sleep scores for rewards like sunrise alarm clocks from Lumie, YOTEL stays, complimentary Hilton Honors Diamond status and up to 100,000 Hilton Honors points.

“Sleep has always been at the heart of the YOTEL experience, and our guests tell us that too, with one in three saying that they choose YOTEL for the quality of sleep they get when staying with us*,” said Olivia Donnan, SVP, Brand, Culture & Growth, YOTEL. “To celebrate YOTEL joining the Hilton portfolio of brands and partners, we wanted to take that focus on rest and reset outside of our hotels and bring it to life in the heart of New York City. The Sleep Exchange was a playful way to get people thinking about their own sleep, while showing how the YOTEL experience and the benefits of Hilton Honors can come together for travelers.”
