There’s nothing wrong with celebrating Halloween a month early by paying a visit to some spooky spots during your travels. With Georgia’s rich Civil War and plantation history, some believe the state is the perfect place to stir more than a few restless spirits.

The Olde Pink House

The Olde Pink House is now a restaurant and tavern owned by Planters Inn in Savannah. The house is indeed bright pink and was built in the late 18th century by Mr. James Habersham, Jr. After his wife died, it’s said Habersham hung himself in the house’s basement. Also acting as the house’s ghosts-in-residence are several slave children who died on the property. Ghostly antics include locking diners in the tavern bathrooms and straightening the table settings.

Tybee Island Lighthouse

Tybee Island Lighthouse was originally built in the early 1700s, but storms and erosion caused it to eventually fall into disrepair, after which the original was rebuilt three different times. Unexplained footsteps, doors slamming and whistling are often heard on the premises, and the ghosts that haunt the grounds include a lightkeeper and several children, one who warns guests not to climb all the way to the top of the lighthouse after dark.

Sorrel-Weed House

Sorrel-Weed House, built in the early 19th century in Savannah, is an acclaimed architectural work in the Greek Revival style. Not only is the plot of land which the house sits on believed to be the site of the Siege of Savannah during the Revolutionary War, but the original owner’s two wives and mistress all died on the grounds, two from suicide. Visitors report feelings of nausea, suffocation and panic, while their cell phones and other electronics refuse to work on the premises.

Kehoe House

Kehoe House is a historic and now luxury hotel property. Completed in 1892, the home was originally owned by a Mr. and Mrs. Kehoe, who lived there with their 10 children. Several of the children died in the house, and it is rumored two were found stuck in a chimney, though attempts have been made to quiet this rumor. Supernatural activity on the property includes ghostly sightings, sounds of children playing, odd smells, lights flickering and the sensation of being touched by an unseen person.

17Hundred90

17Hundred90 is named for the year of its construction and was originally three residences, but is now a stylish inn and restaurant. One of the first residents, a young woman, committed suicide by jumping out of a second-story window and her spirit now lives in her old room, where she loudly sobs and steals guests’ belongings. The other resident spirit is a voodoo-practicing cook who at one time worked in the house and now creates aggressive noises such as pots banging and loud crashes.
