With an array of gorgeous landscapes, Hawai’i offers an abundance of picturesque hiking spots.

Diamond Head Summit

Quite easily the most popular hiking spot on Oahu, Diamond Head is a short hike, but don’t let the 1.5-mile round-trip distance fool you. The steep incline and narrow path, which winds its way up the volcanic rim, is not for those with a fear of heights. The views from the top are well worth the ascent, though, offering a complete panoramic view of the entire island.

Pipiwai Trail

A much longer hike, you’ll want to head out early in the morning for Pipiwai Trail and Waimoku Falls. The Maui trail features an array of waterfalls hidden by a bamboo forest, of which 400-foot Waikmoku Falls is the favorite. The four-mile hike will take you about half of the day.

Alaka’i Swamp Trail

For advanced hikers, the Alaka’i Swamp Trail, with its nine miles of difficult terrain, is a challenging adventure. Located on the westernmost inhabited island of Kaua’i, you’ll find a climate unlike anywhere else, with a mixture of mountains, swamps and spectacular views.

Koko Head Crater Trail

Those with limited time can try Koko Head Crater Trail. The journey is less than a mile and only takes a few hours, with most of your stamina expended on the steep stairway. However, just about any hiker can conquer this path, and you’ll love the views of the other islands from the top.

Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail

For a leisurely hike with the possibility of a big payoff, try Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail. The paved path offers great views of the shore and ocean, and is also a popular whale sighting spot. It’s advised hikers bring along a pair of binoculars during whale migration season — winter and spring — to keep an eye out for distant water spouts.
