Vienna is known for its café culture and, although many traditional cafés are still around, the competition is creeping in and not coming from Starbucks. Rather, independent cafés and roasters are popping up and changing the coffee landscape of the city in a major way.
Here are the top five Non-Viennese cafés in Vienna, Austria.
Kaffemik
Kaffemik, located in the seventh district just off of the main shopping drag of Mariahilferstrasse, serves up all of the best roasts with its rotating series of guest roasters hailing from Spain, Sweden and beyond. You can also attend the occasional roasting workshop and evening class here.
Coffee Pirates
Coffee Pirates, located in the ninth district, is not to be missed. They are pirates! And this coffee packs a punch. This is the first organic third wave coffee roaster in Vienna and apparently award winning. Buy a bag of coffee to take home with you.
Aggys Coffeeshop
Aggys Coffeeshop in the third district is a shop and not a café. If you need an excuse to go see the Belvedere Palace and take a walk around the trendy third district, look no further.
Kaffeeküche
Kaffeeküche, located in the Schottentor Passage 8 in the first district, sounds like a fancy address and it is if you like coffee stands in underground streetcar stations. This place has the best milchkaffee in town. It might not be roasted on site, but the combination of the creamy milk and strong but smooth coffee is like none other in the city. Go there and then walk around the first district with the perfect coffee.
Wiener Rösthaus
Wiener Rösthaus is located in the eighth district. If you are more interested in the roasting process and buying a bag of beans, this is your stop. These beans are roasted in the Vienna tradition and more traditional than the others, but absolutely delicious.
