Some of the most beautiful places in the world look even better from above. If you have the opportunity to take a helicopter or small plane ride, these are the places to do it.
Mount Everest
Nine of the top 15 peaks in the world are located in the Nepalese Himalayas, a snow-covered mountain region best seen from above. Flights are available year-round, but the best visibility is in September and May. One of the most affordable flights is through Get Your Guide for around $185. Buddha Air is another good option.
British Colombia, Canada
You can fly over almost any part of Canada and the view will be beautiful, but British Colombia’s rough, untouched, diverse geography offers a truly exceptional experience. Fly over glaciers, forests, mountain ranges and bright blue lakes with Babin Air for as low as $100.
Victoria Falls
Named one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls are the world’s largest, roughly twice the size of Niagara Falls. Experience the powerful, awe-inspiring falls from above (where you’ll be much drier) with The Zambezi Helicopter Company for as little as $15.
The Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is so large (277 miles long to be exact) you can only glimpse its majesty in bits and pieces from different vantage points. Only the aerial view captures its true immensity and grandeur. For a more exciting experience, take a helicopter ride with Maverick and fly below the rim to the canyon floor and over the Colorado River. Other helicopter flights are available from Las Vegas and Grand Canyon National Park.
Antarctica
Antarctica isn’t usually a daytrip thing, but with Qantas it can be. Explore the great white continent from the comfort of a Qantas Boeing 747-400 as it flies over scattered ice, icebergs, ice floes, rugged mountains and blue water. Flights take approximately 12 hours and include drinks and food.
