From spindly streets to mansard roofs, the view of Paris from above is almost as iconic as the landmarks dotting the city. Finding the perfect place to see the City of Light is a must on any trip to the French capital. Here are a few places to check out, snag a photo and take a moment to soak up the beauty of Paris.
1. The Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower needs no introduction. The highest point in the city proper, the top of the Eiffel Tower offers beautiful, sweeping views of the city. But the crowds can be heavy and full of scam artists, so be prepared. Depending on the day of the week and whether visiting during popular tourist times, plan on the trip to the top taking a chunk of time.
2. Tour Montparnasse
Located in the 15th arrondissement (one of the outer rings of the city), this skyscraper provides a birds-eye view of the city. Many people favor the Tour Montparnasse view because it includes the Eiffel Tower, making for a more iconic photo-op. Like the Eiffel Tower, expect crowds.
3. Sacre Coeur Basilica
At the top of the Montmartre hill, Sacre Coeur is a prime place to scope out the city. Although not as high as the Eiffel Tower or the Tour Montparnasse, the view is exquisite. The stairs open up below you and all the rooftops of Paris cluster together in a way that is sure to please any romantic. And the best part: No admission fee.
4. Arc de Triomphe
The Champs-Elysees is already a beautiful destination everyone should walk at least once when visiting Paris. At the top of the street, the Arc de Triomphe is another must-see. But climbing to the top and surveying the complex system of streets that radiate from this landmark should be at the top of every list.
5. Centre Pompidou
This contemporary art museum in Les Halles is a popular landmark due to the unique structure, which features all piping on the outside. But for the cost of admission, visitors are also treated to an incredible view of the city. The building’s walls are clear, and all along the outside wall of the gallery one can look out over the city. With fewer crowds and more continuous movement, this is a great option for those uninterested in sacrificing time for a shot of the whole city.
