You want an island getaway this season, but your social feed is filled with Iceland and only Iceland? It’s true the island nation’s tourism is booming and you probably know several friends who’ve been there. You may have even gone yourself! If you’re looking for the next great island adventure, though, you may want to start planning to give these up-and-comers a try.
Baffin Island
The biggest island in Canada and fifth-largest in the world, Baffin Island is a dramatically breathtaking destination. There’s plenty of outdoor adventure, wildlife (narwhals!), annual festivals and seafood. Stay warm — this island is by no means tropical, and is about parallel with both Iceland and Greenland.
Gotland
Sweden’s largest island, Gotland calls itself the island of opportunities. Explore views of the Baltic Sea and the island’s famous sea stacks, walk in the footsteps of Vikings and enjoy the heritage of fine craftsmanship still practiced in the forms of pottery and wool products.
A part of the Maltese archipelago, this island offers a Mediterranean experience that’s comparatively rural and more scenic. It’s often thought of as the home of the nymph Calypso, featured in Homer’s Odyssey. View some of the world’s oldest structures, including many historic temples, and choose from many seaside resorts on picturesque beaches.
Lord Howe Island
If it’s a tropical retreat you seek, that none of your friends have ever heard of, check out Lord Howe Island. Belonging to Australia, this volcanic remnant is situated in the Tasman Sea. A two-hour flight from Sydney or Brisbane, it features gorgeous beaches, all the water sports you could want, hiking, snorkeling and more.
Fyn
A Danish island, Fyn offers a multitude of activities for every traveler. There are 123 castles and manor houses, endless cycling opportunities, museums, history and cuisine. Plus, the island is surrounded by the rest of the Danish archipelago, which consists of nearly 100 other islands to explore at your leisure.
