Top 5 / North America

Headed to Canada before spring hits? Beyond the given snowboarding and skiing, these are the top five winter activities with a truly Canadian feel you won’t want to miss, wherever you happen to be staying.

Ice Fishing

A unique regional experience, ice fishing isn’t something you’ve probably done or have even thought of doing, that is until the opportunity presents itself. Head out onto the heavily frozen lakes of Canada and set up an ice-fishing operation (some more extravagant than others) and wait for your catch of the day.

Dog Sledding

It’s not just for Alaska. Dog sledding can be found all over Canada, and the season runs through March, so you still have some time! Quebec’s mushing season is ongoing right now, so book your experience before it’s too late.

Snowshoeing

Test your winter sports endurance with snowshoeing, an intense workout that allows you to simultaneously see some of Canada’s most beautiful mountains, lakes and countrysides. Some of the favorite spots for this activity include Whistler and Kouchibouguac National Park in New Brunswick.

Winter Diving

We’re not talking about a polar bear plunge here. Try winter diving off the coast of Vancouver Island for pristine visibility. The waters are frigid, but you’ll get an unparalleled look at the waters off the northern Pacific Coast.

Aurora Borealis Watching

Head into the northern reaches of Canada to get glimpses of the northern lights later into the season. Try the Yukon, Saskatchewan or the Northwest Territories, where you can additionally enjoy lots of other winter activities (polar bear watching, anyone?) while you’re at it.
