Tips / Travel

With the holidays fast approaching, many are wondering (and stressing) about holiday cards. Maybe it’s your first time sending out a batch of greetings or maybe you just want a card that will stand out on your loved one’s fridge. For globetrotting card senders, using travel photos to create unique cards is a fast, easy and entertaining way to send holiday wishes (or wishes throughout the year) with a personal twist.

To start creating your perfect travel-centric holiday card, you need a great photo. Every traveler has their favorite trip pictures, the ones they feel sum up the trip in just one image. Since it’s the holidays, the ideal picture will likely be one that is joyful and fun. Sort through your favorite pictures and see what turns up. Do you have one with a wide smile on Machu Picchu? Or maybe a picnic in a Berlin park? Or capturing a quirky moment in Sydney? Set aside the best three or four, and hop on the computer.

For those who are more design-inclined, making a card yourself can be a fun project. Pick up some higher-quality photo paper, pull up your favorite design program and go wild. But for those of us who are less than design- and computer-savvy, websites offer some great and affordable options. One of these is Pinhole Press, an easy-to-navigate site that will deliver beautiful cards to your door, ready to address. Pinhole Press offers a number of templates, with simple-to-follow instructions to upload single or multiple photos and add text.

If personalized cards are a priority, consider leaving a small blank space on the front or back to add a simple, personal note. Or, opt for fold-over cards to add a longer greeting.

The entire process of creating cards can take just one afternoon, and it’s a fun way to get into the holiday spirit. Deadlines to ensure delivery in time for the holidays change from website to website, so make sure to check before placing your order, or keep the order in mind for holidays and other special occasions throughout the year.
