Romania has a reputation as the stomping grounds of gypsies and as the birthplace of the undead. Don’t worry, though, you won’t find Dracula wandering any of the country’s beautiful cobblestone streets. As a less visited destination than most of its neighbors, you might be surprised to find Romania is a welcoming city with few dangers. Here are a few tips for staying safe.
Secure Your Items
Catching the train is a popular method of getting from city to city in Romania, but the compartments for your goods aren’t always secure. Be sure to lock up if you decide to sleep overnight and keep your most important bag tucked under your head as a pillow.
Be Wary of Gypsies
Gypsies, more accurately described as Roma ethnic minorities, are not uncommon around larger cities in Romania. Though they travel in small groups and are generally friendly, they have a reputation for trying to beg money off of tourists. They’ll often use children to tempt you, so don’t fall for it.
Respect Local Values
Romania is a traditionally conservative country that is slow-moving when it comes to change. Liberal ideas can be frowned upon and things like same-sex public displays of affection could lead to a brawl in the street. Wear clothing that matches the local climate and avoid touchy conversations and you’ll fit in well.
Pay Attention
While the vast majority of Romanians are friendly, law-abiding citizens, there has been a problem with petty thefts for travelers. Keep your backpacks secure with locks and hide your important items — like wallets, passports and keys — someplace secure on your body where pickpockets cannot reach them.
