The devastation Hurricane Maria brought to the Caribbean islands was in the news extensively last fall. And, as usual, the 24-hour news cycle moved on from this devastation, even though it is still at the center of this region’s day-to-day operations. The need for more aid is clear and the path to recovery for the inhabitants of Puerto Rico is slow and arduous. What cannot be denied is the heart of the economy of these islands is still tourism. Tourism is essential and it is still worth the possibility of visiting the islands in spite of recent events. It is the best way to support the economy in a sustainable way and to reinforce the vibrancy for which this region is celebrated.

If you were to plan a trip to Puerto Rico right now, where could you go? You have more options than you think. Check out the tourism board’s website for a clear picture of how Puerto Rico is recovering quickly. The international airport (SJU) is fully operational and most hotels are accepting visitors.

If you visit San Juan, be sure to check out the modern districts, as well as the historic sites of the city. In addition, most beaches are open for tourism. The mountain regions are still suffering so you may consider traveling with a charitable organization and giving back to the economy that way. Contact Habitat for Humanity or, if you would like to make a charitable donation, visit the Charity Navigator to find a trusted organization.
