You can find plenty of history just by walking the city streets. Begin at the Galway City Museum, where admission is free. It’s a great starting point, as it affords views of the other major landmarks.

If you find yourself speeding through the castles and other significant structures in record time, however, you may want to explore Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, which passes through Galway as it stretches up and down the coast.

Grab lunch or dinner for less than $15 at Kai Café + Restaurant. The fresh and local fare changes daily according to what’s available and in season, but you can expect to find plenty of filling, good-for-you options.

Be sure to take a ferry to the Aran Islands at some point, where you’ll find the secluded location has protected the strong Irish heritage there from outside influences. In addition to the beautiful panoramas, you’ll also discover ancient ruins and plenty of opportunity for outdoor sports.
