Located directly across the river from lower Manhattan in New Jersey, Hoboken is home to many intrepid commuters and die-hard New Jersey natives. The walkable city is perfect for a daytrip.

With two locations in Hoboken, The Little Grocery is a cozy breakfast spot. Choose from omelets, egg sandwiches and pastry to pair with a gourmet coffee for about $10–12. Take a stroll past Carlo’s Bake Shop. Made famous on the TLC show Cake Boss, the Hoboken bakery is the original. Don’t be surprised to see a line spanning the block.

Make your way to Symposia Bookstore and Community Center. Browse the more than 4,000 book collection at this non-profit used bookstore. Learn more about the city’s history at the Hoboken Historical Museum. Open Tuesday–Sunday, admission costs $4.

For stunning views of Manhattan, have lunch at Blue Eyes Restaurant. Named after Frank Sinatra, the riverfront restaurant serves up pizza, pasta, paninis and gelato. Weekday lunch specials cost $12.95. Go for a walk along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. Free kayaking is available via the Hoboken Cove Boathouse. The season runs from late May through September, weather permitting.

Splurge on dinner at Hoboken institution Elysian Café. The French bistro-style restaurant is the oldest continually operated bar/restaurant in Hoboken. Dinner costs $25–40.

Be transported to a European beer hall at Pilsner Haus & Biergarten. It’s the perfect spot for a late night brew on the outdoor patio. Choose from more than 20 premium drafts or 50 European or American craft beer bottles, starting at $6.
